Four startups connected to University of California, Irvine technology have been selected to present at the San Diego Innovation Showcase on October 26 in La Jolla, California.

The San Diego Innovation Council hosts the showcase. Its mission is to convene the region’s premier research institutions to promote a shared vision for growth through innovation, entrepreneurial activities, and education. Council members are committed to supporting commercialization, investment, and new company formation. Through biannual meetings, the council aims to reinforce and enhance the economic impact of the region.

Invention tracks for innovation featured in the event include healthcare/diagnostics, software/electronics, materials/engineering and cleantech emerging from a consortium of participating technology transfer offices representing UC Irvine, Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, Salk Institute, San Diego State University, University of Arizona, UC San Diego, SPAWAR, and J. Craig Venter Institute.

Participating UCI-based startups in the showcase:

CellOnyx, Inc. – Cellular capacity software solution provider for 3G, 4G, 5G, and IoT networks

Obsidio Therapeutics, Inc. – Oncology therapeutic that is broadly effective against intractable cancers

PhageTech, Inc. – Electrochemical biosensor platform for low-cost diagnostic testing

Velox Biosystems – Instrument for the rapid diagnosis of sepsis and antibiotic resistance

“Obsidio Therapeutics, a UCI spin-out founded by myself, and scientists Dr. Aimee Edinger and Dr. Stephen Hanessian, welcomes the opportunity to present as part of the San Diego Innovation Showcase on October 26. Obsidio will showcase its first in class oncology therapeutic OBT-893, which, unlike standard targeted therapies, is effective against tumors with diverse driver mutations and metabolic profiles–providing a sustainable approach to treating multiple classes of tumors. Obsidio looks forward to engaging with both partners and life science investors as it raises financing to move its lead compound towards the clinic,” said Raksha D. Shah, MBA, founder and CEO of Obsidio Therapeutics, Inc.

The day-long event features Steve Poizner, successful Silicon Valley entrepreneur, former California insurance commissioner, and the driving force behind the Alliance for Southern California Innovation, who will serve as the keynote speaker. Following the keynote will be a panel discussing the San Diego innovation and investment ecosystem, with insights provided by investment, industry, academic, and community leaders.

Attendees represent a cross-section from leading companies, investment firms, and startups presenting their early-stage technologies. The event will provide connections for those looking for investment or partnering opportunities with emerging companies presenting at the showcase.

“We are pleased to receive an invitation to present the innovative technology of CellOnyx at the San Diego Innovation Showcase. As a spinoff of an organic research project at UC Irvine, CellOnyx’s solutions offer the best ‘return-on-investment’ to cellular infrastructure owners through congestion elimination. Attending this showcase offers a great opportunity to introduce our product line and competitive advantage to both the cellular industry and potential investors. Our first goal is to garner a field trial, as well as a solution providing opportunities with both mobile operators and cellular infrastructure providers. Our second goal is to explore potential avenues of investment syndication in our upcoming round of financing,” said Homayoun Yousefi’zadeh, Ph.D., co-founder and CEO of CellOnyx Inc.

The showcase also empowers companies to share their commercialization success stories and provide opportunities for networking with attendees interested in promoting economic development in the region. To learn more about the showcase, visit http://sandiegoinnovationcouncil.org/showcase/.
