UCI Beall Applied Innovation Connects the World to California and the US

Making Waves

UC Irvine (UCI) Beall Applied Innovation, located in UCI Research Park, was established to bring campus-based discoveries and entrepreneurship together with Orange County’s business community to support job creation and economic growth.

Since Applied Innovation opened its doors in 2015, it has done exactly that. Through expediting technology transfer and research commercialization at UCI, engaging with industry partners to fund mutually beneficial research and providing the surrounding community with meaningful resources to achieve their own modern and inclusive American Dream, Applied Innovation has become the central platform for the Orange County entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The work being done at Applied Innovation has garnered the attention of not only members of the local community, but also the attention of entire countries and likeminded international organizations.

Among the international partnerships forged over the years are a formal agreement between Applied Innovation and Canada, which created a bridge for Canadian startups and U.S. companies at the Cove – Applied Innovation’s headquarters – to take advantage of each other’s resources. Applied Innovation formed a similar agreement with Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, from the Netherlands, where Applied Innovation would serve as a springboard for Dutch companies interested in expanding into the U.S.

In addition to international partnerships, Applied Innovation has opened its doors to others from abroad who are interested in entrepreneurship and Orange County’s business-building resources. Applied Innovation hosted an event for 12 life science-focused companies from the United Kingdom to discuss opportunities in expanding into the U.S., and former Applied Innovation Executive Director and UCI Chief Innovation Officer Richard Sudek taught an entrepreneurship course, hosted by the UCI Paul Merage School of Business, for MBA students visiting from University of St. Gallen in Switzerland.

The increased popularity on the world stage is no accident, according to Applied Innovation Chief Administrative Officer and Director of External Relations Kate Klimow.

“UCI Beall Applied Innovation has, as part of its mission, the goal to help transform Orange County into a globally recognized startup ecosystem,” said Klimow. “We know we are delivering on building the local startup ecosystem, but strength comes from connecting ecosystems regionally and beyond to share best practices and innovate how we work together.”

Klimow recently hosted a virtual panel in February for the Association of British HealthTech Industries and Greater Irvine Chamber of Commerce for U.K. life science companies interested in relocating or expanding their markets to Orange County, and will be participating in an upcoming virtual trade expo created in partnership with the BritishAmerican Business Network, British Chambers of Commerce, and the Department for International Trade.

Facilitating connections – both locally and abroad – is just one of the many ways in which Applied Innovation is working to cultivate an innovation district in the heart of Orange County.
